Having a new baby on the way is a wonderful but sometimes stressful event. One of your greatest pressures during this time will be deciding on a baby name that both you, your partner and eventually your child can live with.
Here are a few tips to help you out.
1. Take Your Time
The name you choose is going to be with you and your child for a very long time. Take your time and get it right.
2. Narrow it Down
Everyone has names that they just don't like. Cross these off the list right off the bat even if Aunt Gertrude is going to be offended. you can't call your baby by a name you hate just to keep others happy!
3. Baby Memories
Along similar lines, don't choose a name that has bad connotations for either you or your partner. If you have bad memories associated with a name, you can be sure that those bad memories will be constantly brought to mind whenever you call your child.
4. Both Genders
Choose a name for both genders despite what the ultrasound tells you - it wouldn't be the first time the doc got it wrong. You need to be prepared.
5. Be Flexible
Similarly, have more than one possible name in mind. When baby pops out he just might not look like a Michael after all. This happened to us - baby popped out - hubby and I looked at each other - Michael instantly became David. He just didn't look like a Michael!
6. Ethnic Pride
Consider your ethnic background - you may want to show your pride in your heritage by naming your baby according to ethnic roots.
7. Meaning Counts
Buy a good baby name book and look for a name meaning that is special to you.
8. Forward Thinking
When your baby arrives in your arms one day soon it will be cute and cuddly. Dimples may seem like the perfect name. But what happens when your baby turns into a teenager who has to brave the schoolyard everyday? He or she won't thank you for a cute and cuddly name!
9. Older Siblings
Tempting as it may be, don't let older siblings or cousins name your baby. The name they come up with probably won't be the best choice. Be careful - they can be very persuasive!
10. Special In The Middle
Make the middle name special. You have to be so careful with the first name. Not too trendy, not too difficult to spell, no wierd nicknames etc. Be creative and have fun with the middle name if you like.
