Taking Antidepressants During Pregnancy

Author: Erica Fedor

There is a lot of concern for mothers who take antidepressants during pregnancy. Even though there may be some prescription medication that negatively affects the fetus, I am here to tell you that Zoloft had no side affects on both of my pregnancies; one of which was twins.

If you were like me, you are too afraid to stop taking your antidepressants for fear that you would sink into a deep depression. That is exactly where you don’t want to be mentally while pregnant.

Even though I have taken 100mg a day of Zoloft through my entire pregnancies, my babies were delivered without any complications. They are also developing normally and show no negative effects of my medication.

My medication had no affect on conception either. I got pregnant three months after starting to try with my first pregnancy and the same month that I started trying with the second pregnancy.

I had been taking my antidepressants for three years before I ever got pregnant. My father committed suicide because of his depression and I was struggling to cope with his loss.

My OB/GYN knew the reason behind my depression and never asked me to stop the medication entirely. At the time I was taking 150mg and he suggested that I lower my dose to a safer level of 100mg; just in case.

I could not be happier with how my children have developed and I am glad I chose to stay on my medication. Pregnancy is difficult enough without depression so why add to it?

This information is just to tell you about my experience. Please consult your doctor before making any changes to your medication.
